The Campaign in Tunisia 1943
By Jim Wallman and Rob Cooper
“Millions of tongues record thee, and anew Following the success at El Alamein in October 1942, the Axis forces found themselves in full retreat along the coast toward Tunisia. A massive series of landings in Algeria and Morocco created a situation that did not look good for the Axis forces, potentially caught between two powerful armies. The race for Tunis, following the Torch landings in November 1942 saw the Axis reinforcing and holding the rapidly advancing Allied army. Winter 1942/43 set in, and operations paused while logistics were built up and the Eight Army, straggling out along the coast road back to Alexandria, raced to bring itself back into the fight. This megagame starts at the point operations resume after the Tunisian winter. The outcome of the campaign was never as certain as it seems now. The Allies fielding an uttely untried American Corps, and a Free French Corps of uncertain loyalty could not be sure how they would fare against battle-hardened Italian and German troops. The situation on the Axis side was little better as command rivalries and stresses of alliance warfare made themselves felt. This game covers the critical three months of campaigning that decided the outcome of the war in North Africa. This was the test to see if the Allies could defeat a substantial Axis force, and as a prelude to a potential invasion of Sicily, Italy or SOurthern France was regarded as a critical turning point for the war.
