THE FIRST WIDE AREA MEGAGAME The Horde Is Coming to a City Near You Saturday 1 July 2017 By Jim Wallman LONDON : BRISTOL : SOUTHAMPTON : BRUSSELS : NIJMEGEN : CAMBRIDGE : LEEDS : MONTREAL : NEW YORK The zombie apocalypse trope is well established in literature, movies, computer and board games. And in megagames too, with the first series of Urban Nightmare megagames played in 2012. As a megagame, the Urban Nightmare games explore the higher level decision making during a major, potentially existential, crisis. In the movies and other games the zombie trope generally focusses on the individual or on small groups of survivors, but rarely explores how the world gets to that state. It all just happened and got out of control. In a megagame we can really look at how things get that far out of control. Or not. In the emerging gameplay of a megagame the outcome is entirely open to the consequences of player decisions and their interactions. In the previous version of the game, the focus was on just one city - Romero City - a place beset with many mundane problems of its own even without the outbreak of a terrifying pandemic. In UN: State of Chaos, we have extended the perspective to explore what is happening across the whole state. Five cities (of which Romero City is the largest) are all struggling with their own troubles and turning to the State Governor and the National Guard for help. Will this be enough? or will the state Governer have to sacrifice valuable political capital and go, cap in hand, to the Federal authorities and the President for Federal help. And the WIDE AREA MEGAGAME (WAM)? So - of course - there is more than just one state in America. What if the crisis is cropping up in more than one state? Together with partners all over the world we are organising multiple megagames, each megagame representing a different state of a fictionalised America containing different cities.
And there will be an overall Federal team in touch with all the games and allocating important resources, in real time, to where they are most needed. This is the first time we have attempted anything like this, so it is an exciting project for Megagame Makers, and megagames in general. And you can be a part of that!

HOW DOES MY LOCAL MEGAGAME-ORGANISING GROUP JOIN THE WAM? Any experienced megagame-organising group is welcome apply to join the WAM. However, you will need to be committed to the project and there are some things that you're group will need to be able to do in order to take part: 1. Your game must be able to run on SATURDAY 1 JULY 2017, and between 10:00 and 17:00 BST. 2. You will need to be able organise the game venue and recruit at least 40 players. (The game will accomodate up to around 90). Your group will take responsibility for setting that up. 3. Your venue will need to have enough table space for the teams and city maps. One of the most common problems with venues is insufficient tables - don't get caught out. As a rough guide the game will need 5 map tables each approx 1m x 2m - plus space for the teams away from the tables. 4. You will need to have reliable and good access to the internet at your venue. The game really needs an internet connection for the media team as well as good communications for the Control team to be able to stay in touch with the control teams of the other games around the world and the Central Control team. 5. The game materials will be available for purchase - either in physical form or in pdf form. The physical form will be more expensive, obviously, but it does mean having all the components at the right scale and less work for you in setting it up. Megagame Makers are ready to help with advice on setting up any of these. Email us if you have any questions or are interested in applying to join the WAM.
