1866 And All That

The Megagame of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866

By Bernard Ganley

Anerley Town Hall, London - 21 May 2016

The game covers the war between Prussia and her ally Italy v. The Austrian Empire and their German allies from the smaller German states in the summer of 1866. The War has many names "The Seven Weeks War" "The Bruderkrieg: The war between brothers" and was noted for its ferocious battles and duplicitous diplomacy.
The continuing growth of Prussia was a threat to the smaller German states that would be swallowed up if Austria was removed as a great power in Germany affairs. The expectation was that Austria would prevail on all fronts, but they ended up losing at the climactic battle of Sadowa/ Koniggratz in Bohemia despite thrashing the Italians. This was made more stunning in that the Austrians were winning at Sadowa till the early afternoon and only by a failure of high command did they concede defeat!

Thus like many of our megagames can the players change history!

Within each team the some players take the roles of the heads of government and the most important ministers, while some take command of the armies each side deployed in the three theatres of war: Bohemia, North Italy and Western Germany.
